The Journey We Are On

Since Hurricane Katrina, leading ministry has felt like navigating a Lewis and Clark adventure. Like those two adventurers, we haven’t had much of a map to know what’s next. The disaster we experienced made noticeable and maybe some not-so-noticeable changes in the lay of the land and in our lives. As a result, navigating a ministry is more challenging; and we’re still on this adventure. The disaster and crisis that followed surprised us, but we are learning that the journey we are on didn’t surprise God – He has a grand plan during the good and the bad times in our life.  At times, this adventure is like a journey, hiking through the woods, wondering what will be at the next turn.  And, then there are times it’s glorious and the view is breathtaking.

One thing we know for sure, Relevant Ministry is launched.  God has been good and RM has had a fantastic start.  Jeff and Angie Hegstrom have become fully engaged since September 2009, in directing RM, making relationships with local ministries, and sharing about life changing opportunities to potential Gulf Coast missionary/interns.  Our first intern, Zach McCabe is experiencing success in both reaching out and building up ministry since his June 2009 start.

“Building healthy ministry - Training future leaders - Serving on the Gulf Coast” out of the devastation of Katrina is a place where I have never been before in my nearly forty years of ministry; however, with this vision we have set what we believe are some reachable goals for 2010 that will make a difference in lives. 

(1) Ten missionary/interns serving, encouraging, and bringing hope in ten ministries along the Gulf Coast. 
(2) Ten volunteer work teams serving for a week on meaningful projects for people yet displaced by Katrina. 
(3) Ten new churches outside of the Mississippi Gulf Coast area supporting RM’s general fund on a regular basis.
(4) Ten new major ($200 a month) individual supporters of the Relevant Ministry general fund.  (note: this goal in no way minimizes your $25 and $50 gifts which actually make up the majority of Relevant Ministry’s constituency making our ministry and work possible).

These general fund increases from churches and several more major donors for Relevant Ministry will insure the success of work projects and help interns in getting a more rapid start as they raise their individual support to serve in their ministry role.

So many of you reading this article have caught the vision of RM and have been faithful prayer warriors and financial givers during 2009.  Your continued partnership, as God enables you, is both needed and appreciated.  As others join Relevant Ministry on our journey these goals will be achieved and greater than that, needs will be met and God will be glorified.
